Reminder and Information

Dear Ed Smith Listserv,

We’re had a lot of snow lately. What I see on every walk and every drive I
take in the snow reminds me of the enormous need for all of us to do our
best to keep sidewalks cleared so that people are able to use them to get
to where they need to go freely and safely . Failing to keep sidewalks
cleared forces people into the streets where they are in danger of being
hit by cars, vans, trucks, plows, etc. As you well know, students living
less than 1.5 miles from their school do not get a bus ride, so this means
MANY children are walking every day. Let’s do everything we need to make
sure they can use the sidewalks, not the streets.

The city of Syracuse’s website says: “During winter months, please remember
that your sidewalks must be kept clear of snow and ice. By ordinance,
anyone with a sidewalk parallel to any public street shall clear and keep
cleared any snow or ice which has accumulated on the surface. This
clearing of snow and ice shall be completed by 6 p.m. of the day following
the accumulation. No person shall shovel, sweep, throw, plow or otherwise
deposit snow or ice into the street, sidewalk or park located within the
city.”

If you have neighbors who are physically unable to clear their sidewalks,
consider lending a hand, or better yet, having your capable elementary or
middle school student do a good deed for the day and take care of the
shoveling for them.

You can report properties that have not complied with the time requirement
and intent of the ordinance to the City’s Community Policing Division at
315-448-8650.

To assist with the city’s effort to compile data on snow removal issues,
you may go to cityline.syrgov.net/. When you scroll down the page,
you will see the words, “Snow Issue Tracker.” Some may notice that this
page has other interesting functions and information as well.

If you have a moment, you may also want to take a look at the Mayor’s press
release about his snow safety plan here

.

The City’s website homepage can connect you with all sorts of helpful
information. The link is: www.syrgov.net.

Opportunity for Middle School Students

Recommended and shared by middle school parent, Brenda Hartman-Souder –

The YMCA’s Young Authors Academy of the Downtown Writers Center is for 6th – 12th grade students with a passion for creative writing, film-making, songwriting, and performing. Small group instruction in the literary arts is provided weekly by professional writers who are also experienced in teaching middle and high school students.

YAA students experience a safe, accepting, positive learning environment where they grow both artisticallty and personally, developing their talents and collaborating with peers who share their interest in the creative arts.

The program has been generously funded to include Y members and students attending Syracuse City School District schools at no cost (some restrictions do apply). The Downtown Writers Center, a program of the Arts Branch of the YMCA, strives to keep the cost for all others affordable and needs-based financial aid is available.

All classes meet at the Downtown Y, 340 Montgomery Street. and there is seating in the DWC Library for parents who would like to wait. Transportation is not provided but the Y is close to the Centro City Hub. Students receiving scholarships through the SCSD or Y membership are required to attend regularly. Poor attendance may result in removal from the program and inability to register for future YAA programming.

Ed Smith K-8 Yearbook Order Information and Request for yearbook photos

From Kay Scott –

Dear Ed Smith K-8 Families,

The students have decided on a fantastic yearbook cover for the 2017-2018 Ed Smith K-8 Yearbook and the theme is “Energized for Excellence.” The students are building the yearbook around this theme and have great ideas for also incorporating the covers that did not win such as: Ed Smith Celebrations, a “Remember When” page for the 8th Grade Students and the day to day activities, friends, classmates, staff and teachers, plus music, sports, clubs, that make up Ed Smith K-8. In order to make an excellent yearbook we however need your photos from school activities and events. You can submit photos for yearbook consideration a number of ways but one of the easiest is to upload your photos online to Lifetouch at:
community.lifetouch.com

Community Image Upload Site Access Code: EOVUKM

You can also submit photos on a memory stick and your memory stick will be returned. You will need to submit the memory stick to the in school yearbook adviser Ms. Essi and you can drop off the memory stick in an envelope marked: Yearbook Photos, to Ed Smith Secretary, Michelle Demianenko.

To order an Ed Smith K-8 Yearbook you can click on the link below.

You will also be able to order a yearbook with a paper order form that we will be sending home with students this coming week.

Please check your child’s backpack in the coming week for a paper yearbook order form. Paper yearbook orders can be submitted directly to your child’s teacher or to the main office. Please include the needed payment with cash or check made out to the Ed Smith PTO.

If you have any yearbook questions, you can contact parent yearbook adviser: Kay Scott at 315-491-0612 (text message or cell number) or email at: kayascott [at] yahoo [dot] com

Seeking donations of winter coats, boots, socks, and sweat pants

From Anna Dahlstein –

*Winter Coat Drive for Ed Smith Students*

*(…and boots and socks and sweat pants, too!)*

Have your kids outgrown their winter coats, sweat pants, or boots?

Mind picking up an extra pair of socks at the store? Ed Smith teachers and
the Nurse’s Office urgently need these for students who’ve had an accident
at school, gotten their feet wet/cold on the playground, etc.

Please consider donating the following items to the collection bin right
outside the school’s main office:

– Winter *coats* and *boots*, any kids’ sizes for ages 6-13
– *Sweat pants* or *leggings*, any kids’ sizes for ages 6-13
– *Socks!*

(The PTO already has a stash of gloves and hats.)

*Thank You!*doc icon Coat-Drive.docx
