Thanks for enhancing the playground

The Ed Smith PTO would like to thank everyone who helped make our playground enhancement project such a success. Many people have noticed the “spinner” that was installed on the playground Friday. The spinner is the first of new inclusive playground equipment that has been purchased by the PTO from donations raised this year. Excavation for the installation of the spinner was done for the school as a gift from the Hueber-Breuer construction firm. Special thanks goes to Ed Smith neighbor, Andy Breuer, for arranging this donation. The Syracuse City School District installed the spinner. Tom Ferrara, SCSD Director of Facilities, Maintenance & Operations and David Delaney, SCSD Superintendent of Buildings & Grounds, deserve special thanks for their help with the playground expansion and for providing the materials for the playground enhancement day. Please watch the playground for additional new equipment that will be installed this spring. A big round of thanks goes to the many Ed Smith parents, students, staff, and Principal Barber who braved the cold weather on Saturday and did a yeoman’s job weeding and mulching. The Ed Smith team received extra assistance from approximately 10 SUNY-ESF students who volunteered time to help improve our playground. The ESF students worked tirelessly and with great enthusiasm. Their contributions were extremely appreciated! The ESF students also assisted with the planting of a new tree in front of the school. The tree was provided through the efforts of Ed Smith parent Steve Harris. The Ed Smith Student Council, under the direction of Linda Kraemer, did a wonderful job presenting a ceremony dedicating the tree to peaceful school communities. When the weather warms up, we hope to organize another playground service day that will include additional painting of the blacktop area. Please look for future announcements about the playground. In the meantime, if you are missing a rake or basketball from Saturday’s event, you can pick them up in the main office. Again, thanks to everyone for all your hard work to make our playground a better place for our children. Sincerely, Brenda Greenfield & Kay Scott Ed Smith PTO, Co-Presidents
