Dear Edward Smith Parents and Teachers of 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Students,
Edward Smith has been presented with an opportunity to take part in the Syracuse Soap Box Derby Race to be held on June 9th, 2012 with a Soap Box Derby Stock Car on loan. We however, are in need of interested teachers, parents and children. Soap Box Derby Stock Division Cars are designed for girls or boys in Grades 3-7, ages 7-12, for a child up to 5’3″ and up to 125 lbs.
The Syracuse Soap Box Derby is holding a “mostly school STEM” driver’s practice this Saturday, May 19th. We are looking for one or two interested entrants/drivers (and a parent or two) who can make the practice. There will be a car to practice in. Practices are at the Chiefs parking lot; corner of Hiawatha and Second North street. Times are from 9 am – noon, and you will probably stay for an hour or more depending on excitement of the drivers.
The SCSD Educational Foundation has recently partnered with the SCSD in an initiative to enhance students learning and mentoring through the use of Soap Box Derby Racing. Through this experience students will reinforce their STEM learning through authentic competitive engineering project.
We are also hoping that a group of interested parents may be willing to write a grant to the SCSD Educational Foundation to request a car or cars to represent Edward Smith K-8 School. The grant is designed to support mentor/mentee relationships through the design, assembly and racing of a Soap Box Derby Car. Separate applications need to be completed in full and submitted for each Soap Box Derby Car requested. The SCSD grant application would occur in the fall of 2012 since winter 2011 and spring 2012 grants have already been awarded. The grant application form is not difficult and requests applicant information, project contact, principal, students that may be involved in the project, adults that will be involved and the Soap Box Derby Car Request (Stock vs. Super Stock) and to explain why you believe this project will benefit Edward Smith School, Students and Curriculum. The Soap Box Derby Project is a multi-year engagement, where the student/mentor team has the ability to rebuild the care and re-enter the derby each year, for up to 8 years.
There was a Soap Box Derby Car that was at the recent STEM evening on Thursday, April 26th. We are hoping to continue the enthusiasm from the STEM evening and move forward with an educational and fun opportunity for Edward Smith K-8 Families. Soap Box Derby Racing was first held in Syracuse in 1934 and we hope to build on this long history.
If there are interested Edward Smith K-8 Teachers, parents and children to participate in the Syracuse Soap Box Derby please contact: Kay Scott, PTO Co-President at Kayascott [at] yahoo [dot] com
